MUSIC/Music Part 3

From Syd Barrett: Works
Jump to navigationJump to search

Syd Barrett wrote Pink Floyd's first three singles, almost all the songs for their first album and the ending song for their second album. After that he released under serious difficulties only part of his repertoire in a couple of solo albums which failed to chart, though their artistic value is still under discussion.

PART 3 - BELATED RELEASES

Trying to cover the insistent requests from fans who knew about unreleased Syd Barrett recordings, a company was able to release some material on a CD maxi single shortly after that the Syd Barrett solo albums appeared on the then-new CD format, selling very quickly in some of the record shops where it was available, and a 12" vinyl EP version was released the month after.

Recorded on 24 February 1970 at BBC Maida Vale Studios, London

Released in January 1988 by Strange Fruit Records

Distributed by Pinnacle Records

Notes: Radio show on Top Gear, broadcast on BBC Radio 1 on 14 March and 30 May 1970. Syd Barrett performed live with David Gilmour and Jerry Shirley. Made for a series of radio recordings, this CD contained the only Syd Barrett recording officially released since the end of 1970, with the unreleased track "Two of a Kind", once credited to Richard Wright but claimed to be one of his own songs by Syd Barrett himself. However, many of his unreleased tracks were not unknown to the audience around the illegal bootleg market: tracks 2 and 4 were already on the first of these bootleg Unforgotten Hero, circulating in 1977, which included also two of the most important Syd Barrett compositions, "Scream Thy Last Scream" and "Vegetable Man", recorded for his band in 1967. Instead, Two of a Kind and all of the songs from this and the only other radio show outside Pink Floyd appeared on the 1984 bootleg Tattood.

From the local newspaper Swindon Evening Advertiser:

Welcome back Syd Barrett - new hero of the compact disc age. Syd's CDs are selling like hot cakes in Swindon. A five-track Syd Barrett CD single is disappearing from the shelves of the town's only CD shop as fast as they can get them in. Owner of the Victoria Road shop, Geoff Miles, says: "I'm into my third batch of Syd Barrett singles. Who'd believe old Syd would sell so many discs?"

Malcom Jones wasn't able to accept that songs like his favourite Opel were still unreleased. He died the year before EMI released this compilation, also thanks to a petition he promoted.

Notes: Opel was one of those songs that Syd Barrett introduced to Malcolm Jones at the beginning of their work for the first album, intended to be in the tracklist until the last days of work with David Gilmour, who eventually decided the final tracklist and the title The Madcap Laughs.

Julian Palacios, from his book Dark Globe:

The corpus of unreleased Syd songs in EMI's vaults caused a steady stream of petitions demanding they be issued … Diagnosed with liver cancer, Jones kept up the pressure … Jones died before he could see an album's worth of out-takes and unreleased tracks issued as Opel.

Promotional advertisement for the compilation. Despite several positive reviews, it failed to chart.

Other compilations were made afterwards, with bonus tracks and remastered versions, but apart some remaining alterate takes, the only really new song was Bob Dylan Blues.
Obviously they could never reach the importance that the Opel compilation had.
